Justice Brown Jackson and the Cowrie Shells
An accessory that means so much more to us.
Today, I logged into Threads and I saw a thread from @feministajones about Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and the cowrie shell collar she wore to Inauguration. You can see the official picture here.

First, the cowrie shell collar made me think about something that happened last summer. I was in a restaurant ordering food and one of the girls behind the counter complimented the shells in my locs. Without skipping a beat, the Black girl working with her added, "They're cowrie shells! Protection."
The cowrie shell collar also reminded me of one of the most important pages in Oshún and Me:

"The cowrie shells told Oshún how to help the people she loved. And because I love you, I put the cowries in your hair so you carry her protection with you. When you're scared or sad, you can just touch your cowrie shell, and it will give you the strength and power of Oshún, the most beautiful and loving goddess."
I think it was a perfect thing for Justice Brown Jackson to wear on a day like MLK day. Especially during this Inauguration Day. A perfect tool and symbol. 💛
