Did you know that 28 men were on Lewis and Clark’s Expedition? Did you know that the 28th man did not choose to go? He was an enslaved man named York, and he was essential to the expedition.

Lewis and Clark relied on York’s judgement, determination, and peacemaking throughout their trek, but York wasn’t given his freedom after the expedition. Many people don’t know about York and his essential role.

York leads the Lewis and Clark Expedition through a snowstorm in the Bitterroot Mountains in present day Idaho.

York is not included in the celebration of the end of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

You can read more of his story in the picture book, The Journey of York, written by Hasan Davis, illustrated by me, and published by Capstone!

Side note: The Journey of York was my very first traditionally published picture book! It’s available wherever books are sold.

I'll be back tomorrow with another legendary Black figure.

Proudly,
Alleanna
